ALS, 1842 May 23 : Washington, to James A. Caldwell.

Buchanan refers to then President John Tyler: "I feel every disposition to support both when I can do so without a violation of principle, but I cannot approve his Exchequer project ..." This was a plan presented to Congress which envisioned a public banking institution directed by a non-partisan Board of Control. Also referred to are Lord Ashburton's negotiations, conducted with Daniel Webster, adopting a compromise northern boundary of Maine.
